Adopt-a-Highway:

Trash pick-ups for 2010 highway clean-up are scheduled for May 1st (rain date May 8) !and September 25 (rain date October 2).

2010 Wabasha County Convention Results:

Election results for state delegates was the following:

Jim Dahling and Todd Siewert are delegates Paul Wotzka and Mark Schneider as alternates Mindy Tomfohrde and Cindy Swessel-Hofer are delegates Connie Hoke and Elise Diesslin as alternates

It’s been a whirlwind since we clinched the DFL endorsement late on Saturday night, and I want you to know that we won because of your strong support of this campaign.

We’re visiting Bloomington, Mankato, Rochester, Morehead today and we’ll be criss-crossing the state visiting other communities in the coming weeks.

The DFL Must Focus on Greater Minnesota

Coming from Worthington, I have a special tie to Minnesota’s smaller towns and rural communities, which are key to DFL victory in November 2010. As I’ve said many times, we will not win if the first time our candidate has visited Zumbro Falls – or International Falls, Cannon Falls, or Thief River Falls – is while running for governor.

I’ve been traveling Minnesota for years: as House DFL leader and with Minnesota 2020, the progressive think tank I founded in 2007 and chaired until April. I know that for too long, greater Minnesota has been ignored.

The theme of my campaign is “Making Minnesota Work Again.” That means the entire state – with a special focus on greater Minnesota. Our kids – sadly, now greater Minnesota’s biggest export – aren’t leaving just because they want to. They feel they have no choice. There aren’t enough educational or employment opportunities.

I’d like to tell you how I intend to change this.

Let’s start with the economy. For years we’ve focused on attracting large businesses to “save” one region or another. It’s easier for a big foreign business to get millions of dollars to relocate than it is for your neighbor to get $2,500 to launch or expand a business.

Diversity means stability. When we focus on nabbing big, out-of-state businesses, we orient everything we do to keeping them happy, fearful of what would happen if they left. They take their profits back to their headquarters cities instead of reinvesting in our communities.

I want to build Minnesota business by making Minnesota the Silicon Valley of clean energy. The clean energy economy is characterized by things we’re good at: innovating, creating value-added products, and developing a skilled labor force. Further, we have the right natural resources: plenty of wind, lots of sun, and plant life for biofuels. Leveraging the potential of the clean energy economy, we’ll create high-quality jobs all over Minnesota. We just need a vision, translated to policy and legislation that will make Minnesota a leader in this new economy.

Our vision must encompass education. Following World War II, when the GI Bill massively increased the number of Americans going to college, America entered a period of unprecedented prosperity.

Minnesotans have always valued education: strong basic education and great higher education at nearly 200 public and private institutions. Unfortunately, even at public colleges, costs have risen much faster than family incomes and money available for scholarships. Under Gov. Pawlenty, tuition is up more than 50 percent and climbing. Graduates carry massive debt, and talented Minnesotans are opting not to continue their education because they can't afford it.

For Minnesota to remain a player economically, we must recommit to education. As governor, I’ll reinvest in state colleges and universities and community and technical colleges, better align these institutions with local economic opportunities, keep higher education regionally accessible, and reward public service with scholarships.

Next, we must ensure workers’ rights. Throughout my career, I’ve supported organized labor. As a legislator, I consistently racked up 100-percent voting records with the AFL-CIO. Additionally, as a young worker, I helped organize a Hennepin County AFSCME local. I understand the struggles of workers trying to organize and strongly support making it easier for them to unionize.

Finally, I know health care is on everyone’s minds. While I believe federal-level reform will yield the best results, if that doesn’t happen, Minnesota still can reform. I support a Medicare-like plan. Medicare isn’t perfect, but it provides a good roadmap.

Greater Minnesota faces special challenges. I’ll share what my friend Tracy Beckman, a former state senator from southern Minnesota, has to say about this:

“Matt understands that real health care reform will require more than simply creating a program; it will involve ensuring quality health care providers are available all over the state. It will involve meeting long-term care needs for our growing elderly population. It will involve a focus on delivering care, not just administering insurance.

“At this critical time for Minnesota – when we not only face serious health care issues but also major economic, employment, and education challenges – I know Matt Entenza will focus squarely on making Minnesota work again. His commitment to health care for all is firm and proven by his record in the Minnesota House of Representatives. He has a vision for rebuilding our economy and creating jobs all over the state. And from his own personal experience, Matt knows that education is the key to enabling people to build a better life for themselves – and to creating even more jobs and opportunities for the people of our state.
