Candidate For Governor Corner

Articles from Campaigns & internet links

Dear Friends,

After resting up from my adventure in Southwestern Minnesota, I hit the campaign trail again to talk about how our next governor must be a problem solver who understands our financial challenges and will get Minnesotans back to work.

The week started with a meet and greet in Mankato, interviews at the Mankato Free Press, the New Ulm Journal, and a forum in Morton sponsored by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association.

Joe Spear, editor of the Mankato Free Press, wrote, "He has championed tax credits for small businesses, angel investor tax credits that he says may give employers an incentive to add jobs, a hallmark of his campaign. A tax credit may provide the small business the equity it needs in a project to get the bank to issue a loan, something Bakk says is still not happening all that much.

"He's also realistic about the state budget situation. He says the state can neither tax, nor cut its way out of a potential $5.4 billion deficit, coming due in 2013. That's why he puts the emphasis on jobs, so as to hopefully get the tax revenue flowing again.

"He has a few ideas that have merit on the budget fix, and you can tell he's thought through the political implications. At some point, he'll be offering those to both parties and the general public, but they are ideas, in my mind, that would be tough for both sides of the aisle to turn down.

"Not bad for a carpenter."

Toward the end of the week I attended a forum at Bemidji State University sponsored by the Native Vote Alliance, held meet and greets in Nisswa, Little Falls and at the College of St. Benedict, had an interview with the Brainerd Dispatch, and met with the St. Cloud Times editorial board.

I am working hard to increase my name recognition, educate reporters and editors about the state's financial challenges and the need for "jobs, jobs, jobs," and talk with DFLers about the importance of supporting a candidate who can win statewide. 2010 is a pivotal election. If we don't elect a Democrat this year and move away from the "no new taxes" philosophy of governing, Minnesota will become a different place.

I will continue to work hard in these weeks leading up to the February 2 precinct caucuses. Please attend your precinct caucus and vote for me in the straw poll. With your help we will show Minnesotans that there is support for a proven leader who is dedicated to getting Minnesotans back to work and who can win statewide.

 Sincerely,

Sen. Tom Bakk

Candidate, DFL endorsement for governor

Entenza Campaign

The DFL Must Focus on Greater Minnesota

By Matt Entenza

Coming from Worthington, I have a special tie to Minnesota’s smaller towns and rural communities, which are key to DFL victory in November 2010. As I’ve said many times, we will not win if the first time our candidate has visited Zumbro Falls – or International Falls, Cannon Falls, or Thief River Falls – is while running for governor.

I’ve been traveling Minnesota for years: as House DFL leader and with Minnesota 2020, the progressive think tank I founded in 2007 and chaired until April. I know that for too long, greater Minnesota has been ignored.

The theme of my campaign is “Making Minnesota Work Again.” That means the entire state – with a special focus on greater Minnesota. Our kids – sadly, now greater Minnesota’s biggest export – aren’t leaving just because they want to. They feel they have no choice. There aren’t enough educational or employment opportunities.

I’d like to tell you how I intend to change this.

Let’s start with the economy. For years we’ve focused on attracting large businesses to “save” one region or another. It’s easier for a big foreign business to get millions of dollars to relocate than it is for your neighbor to get $2,500 to launch or expand a business.

Diversity means stability. When we focus on nabbing big, out-of-state businesses, we orient everything we do to keeping them happy, fearful of what would happen if they left. They take their profits back to their headquarters cities instead of reinvesting in our communities.

I want to build Minnesota business by making Minnesota the Silicon Valley of clean energy. The clean energy economy is characterized by things we’re good at: innovating, creating value-added products, and developing a skilled labor force. Further, we have the right natural resources: plenty of wind, lots of sun, and plant life for biofuels. Leveraging the potential of the clean energy economy, we’ll create high-quality jobs all over Minnesota. We just need a vision, translated to policy and legislation that will make Minnesota a leader in this new economy.

Our vision must encompass education. Following World War II, when the GI Bill massively increased the number of Americans going to college, America entered a period of unprecedented prosperity.

Minnesotans have always valued education: strong basic education and great higher education at nearly 200 public and private institutions. Unfortunately, even at public colleges, costs have risen much faster than family incomes and money available for scholarships. Under Gov. Pawlenty, tuition is up more than 50 percent and climbing. Graduates carry massive debt, and talented Minnesotans are opting not to continue their education because they can't afford it.

For Minnesota to remain a player economically, we must recommit to education. As governor, I’ll reinvest in state colleges and universities and community and technical colleges, better align these institutions with local economic opportunities, keep higher education regionally accessible, and reward public service with scholarships.

Next, we must ensure workers’ rights. Throughout my career, I’ve supported organized labor. As a legislator, I consistently racked up 100-percent voting records with the AFL-CIO. Additionally, as a young worker, I helped organize a Hennepin County AFSCME local. I understand the struggles of workers trying to organize and strongly support making it easier for them to unionize.

Finally, I know health care is on everyone’s minds. While I believe federal-level reform will yield the best results, if that doesn’t happen, Minnesota still can reform. I support a Medicare-like plan. Medicare isn’t perfect, but it provides a good roadmap.

Greater Minnesota faces special challenges. I’ll share what my friend Tracy Beckman, a former state senator from southern Minnesota, has to say about this:

“Matt understands that real health care reform will require more than simply creating a program; it will involve ensuring quality health care providers are available all over the state. It will involve meeting long-term care needs for our growing elderly population. It will involve a focus on delivering care, not just administering insurance.

“At this critical time for Minnesota – when we not only face serious health care issues but also major economic, employment, and education challenges – I know Matt Entenza will focus squarely on making Minnesota work again. His commitment to health care for all is firm and proven by his record in the Minnesota House of Representatives. He has a vision for rebuilding our economy and creating jobs all over the state. And from his own personal experience, Matt knows that education is the key to enabling people to build a better life for themselves – and to creating even more jobs and opportunities for the people of our state.

“I know Matt will be a great governor for all of Minnesota. I hope you will join me in supporting him.”

I invite you to learn more about me, my record and my campaign at www.entenza.com.

Dayton Campaign

Please visit us at www.MarkDayton.org. There's "Why I'm Running for Governor," recent articles, and pictures of my "Better 4/5ths": my terrific sons, Eric & Andrew, and my two German shepherds, Mesabi & Dakota.

Our new website comes just a week after I was honored to receive the endorsement of AFSCME MN Council 5's 43,000 members. AFSCME's leaders are among the state's most politically astute, and its members are very active. Their endorsement is a huge boost to my campaign, and I am very grateful for it.

Please help us to build our momentum! Please contribute what you can and join our movement. $5 makes a difference! Or, how about helping to increase our campaign's momentum right through the election with a recurring contribution of $5 or $10 each month? Every dollar really helps!

There are other ways you can join our campaign. You can connect with me on Facebook, Twitter, or our new website and give me your ideas for A Better Minnesota.

See you at www.MarkDayton.org!

Bakk Campaign

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs: The Foundation of a Bakk Administration

As a carpenter and former union leader, Sen. Tom Bakk (DFL-Cook) has a passion for putting people to work. As the Senate Tax chair, Bakk has a track record of proven leadership on job creation and has authored legislation to invest in economic development policies. As governor, an aggressive job creation and business development agenda will be the foundation of a Bakk Administration.

"During the 1981-82 recession I was out of work, my lunch bucket sat on the shelf, and I ran out of unemployment," Bakk said. "When I talk about the importance of having a paycheck on Friday to take care of a family's needs and how I understand the stress Minnesotans without a job are facing, I am speaking from the heart. When I talk about the need to get people back to work to address the state's financial challenges, I am speaking from my experience as chair of the Senate Tax Committee."

As governor, Bakk would provide jobs to help unemployed Minnesotans through public investment, jobs to get our economy moving again through incentives, and jobs to fix our budget deficit by making Minnesota a business-friendly state.

"It's time to increase the state's bonding limits to create good paying construction jobs that will spur white- and blue-collar jobs, update Minnesota's neglected state colleges and universities to train the workforce of the future, and catch up on the deferred maintenance on wastewater treatment facilities to improve our water and environment," Bakk said.

"Because public works projects put real dollars into our economy and is something that can be done now, I am requesting Gov. Pawlenty call a special session to pass a bonding bill before the end of the year." Currently, one of the biggest impediments to job growth in the economy is the lack of capital available to businesses.

"We need incentives for those who can - and have the financial means to - invest in Minnesota businesses and keep those dollars working in Minnesota, not somewhere else," Bakk said. "As governor, I would support job creation through angel investor, historic structure rehabilitation and Minnesota Small Business Investment tax credits, as well as the upfront sales tax exemption on capital equipment."

Bakk knows a strong business environment is a catalyst for a strong job creation environment. In the past months, he has met with leaders of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, Minnesota Business Partnership, and economic developers around the state for their input on how to get Minnesotans back to work.

"After years of negotiating labor contracts, I understand that businesses need to be successful, otherwise they are not able to hire people and offer good wages and benefits," he said. "Our next governor must unite labor and business, Democrats and Republicans, and rural, suburban, and urban interests to move Minnesota forward. I am the candidate who has built the relationships that span all of those interests and can bring everyone together." Bakk is running for governor because the 2010 election is about jobs and he has the experience to get Minnesota working again.

"Minnesota needs a governor whose top priority will be dedicated to putting people back to work - a governor who will go anywhere, any time, in order to create living wage jobs," Bakk said. "There aren't enough taxes to increase or programs to cut to fix Minnesota's next budget deficit. The only way to get Minnesota working again, and to have the revenue necessary to invest in areas that Minnesotans care about, such as education and health care, is to get Minnesotans working again. I have the experience and determination to make that happen."

Rukavina Campaign

Win. Win the 2010 election for Governor of Minnesota. Win it with passion, win it with hope, and win it to make a difference for working Minnesotans. That’s what has been on the mind of every DFL’er I’ve talked with over the last few months.

And that is why I’m running for Governor.

It has been over twenty years since we had a good DFL Governor. The people I meet every day in Minnesota are excited at the prospect of a leader who will work to create jobs, stand strong to provide the best education for our kids, and make government work again for all Minnesotans. I believe I can be that leader.

Watch my new video message. I know we can win--and this campaign can show that a little guy with a lot of passion can create excitement and build a movement to win in Minnesota!

After watching my message, I’m asking you to stop by my website and sign up to help the campaign. Check out my Facebook page and follow my tweets to stay connected as we race to DFL endorsement victory.

I’m humbled by all of the support I’ve received. I’m honored that my “Refreshingly Honest” approach has generated so much enthusiasm. Together we can win and make all of Minnesota proud!

All my best,

Tom Rukavina

Today, I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees.

The more than 12,700 statewide members of MAPE are hardworking professionals who care deeply about the future of our state. They provide essential services to the citizens of Minnesota, such as keeping our lakes and rivers clean, protecting us from food-borne illnesses and identifying pandemics.

In the midst of a painful recession, MAPE’s leaders and members went to work finding ways our state could continue to deliver the quality services Minnesotans value and also save money. Their money-saving initiatives - $350 million in potential budget solutions - were ignored by our current governor. To the men and women of MAPE, I want to say thank you. As your next governor, I will be your partner and together we will move Minnesota forward.

As Minnesota’s next governor, I will listen to all Minnesotans and not just a fortunate few. In my administration, our state’s leaders – leaders in organized labor and the business community, heads of non-profits, elected officials in St. Paul and across the state – will work together to secure our future. Minnesotans deserve leadership that truly delivers accountability and places a priority on value and quality services. I look forward to the work we will do in the years to come.

As our campaign builds momentum and prepares for precinct caucuses on February 2, 2010, earning the support of Minnesotans across the state is important to me. I welcome your thoughts, questions, and ideas for this campaign. I invite you to learn more about me on my website, www.margaretforgovernor.com. You can contact me at 612-616-3329 and at margaret@margaretforgovernor.com.

My best, Margaret
